Deer control can cut ticks, but only at a scale no single yard reaches. The proof for fewer human Lyme cases is thinner.

Deer feed adult ticks. The CDC says they do not give ticks the Lyme bacterium. Mice and other small animals do that.

This guide covers the trials, fences and New York rules. It also shows what works on a Scarsdale lot.

What Deer Do for Ticks

The CDC says deer help ticks survive and spread. It also says deer are not infected with Lyme bacteria and do not infect ticks.

Adult ticks mate on deer, per a peer-reviewed review. Deer keep tick numbers up. They do not carry the infection.

NYSDEC says small mammals, not deer, are the main hosts that pass on the bacterium. Read our mice and ticks guide for that side.

Does Cutting Deer Cut Lyme?

Sometimes. It depends on how far deer numbers fall.

PlaceDeer per sq kmNymph ticks
Monhegan Island, ME44 to 46, then 0About 100% fewer
Bridgeport, CT (fenced)97, then 25About 90% fewer
Mumford Cove, CT21 to 46, then under 10About 50% fewer (CDC review table)
Bernards Township, NJ (open)46, then 18No drop

Source: Kugeler, CDC, 2016. The review notes some rows use unpublished data.

That CDC review finds little robust evidence that deer control lowers human Lyme risk. Elimination on isolated islands has a substantial effect. Partial cuts gave mixed results.

Mumford Cove, one Connecticut community, cut deer to 5.1 per square kilometer. Researchers reported 76% fewer ticks and 80% fewer resident-reported Lyme cases.

The CDC review notes those cases were self-reported by about 100 households. Health-department rash reports showed no significant change.

NYSDEC says very low deer levels can reduce ticks and probably Lyme rates. It says smaller cuts may not lower human infection.

A 2025 paper suggests keeping deer under about 3 to 5 per square kilometer. That is the authors' suggestion, not a proven threshold.

Fences: What Westchester Test Sites Showed

Daniels and colleagues excluded deer from five Westchester sites for 25 years. The sites ranged from 6 to 101 hectares, behind fencing over 2.4 meters high.

Nymphs fell 83% and larvae fell 90%. Infection rates did not differ significantly.

One acre is about 0.4 hectare, so those sites dwarf a village lot.

The same team found that mice, raccoons and opossums cross fences. Adult tick density inside tended to match outside. Fences may not cut the risk of meeting infected adults.

A Connecticut study found no tick difference in a 3.5 hectare exclosure. A 7.4 hectare one cut ticks in plots 70 meters or more from the fence.

The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station says small fenced areas probably work less well alone.

Height advice conflicts. The Connecticut station says 8 feet usually works. NYC health says 5 feet.

Cornell notes fences do not keep out other tick hosts.

What the Evidence Covers

What each deer or tick measure has been shown to do Evidence grid listing seven measures with colored labels for the effect on ticks and on people: cut, mixed, no data or no effect. TICKSPEOPLE Remove all deer (islands) Cut Cut Cut some deer (open land) Mixed Mixed Fence a large area (6+ ha) Cut No data Fence one yard No data No data Deer repellents and plants No data No data Four-poster devices Cut No data Yard bait boxes (Tick Project) Cut No effect Island result: CDC review. Other cells: studies cited below.
Cut means the study found a drop. No data means nobody measured it.

The gaps matter. Nothing shows a fence around one yard lowers ticks or Lyme. Repellents and deer-resistant plants have no tick data at all.

Repellents and Deer-Resistant Plants

One Connecticut test ran 10 repellents on yews. None prevented all browsing damage, and several did no better than no protection.

That study measured plant damage only. We found no study showing repellents or deer-resistant plantings lower ticks. Westchester County Health still lists plantings that do not attract deer as a property tip.

Four-Poster Devices

USDA four-poster feeders coat deer with tick killer. Nymph reductions reached 60 to 82% by site in a seven-site study.

A meta-analysis found a 71% drop by year six. Connecticut and New York sites lagged.

Heavy acorn years cut their effect. Human disease was not measured. NYSDEC says many communities that tried them dropped them, and they need a DEC license.

New York Rules on Deer

DEC says it is illegal to intentionally feed wild deer in New York. A DEC permit is needed to take nuisance or damaging deer.

Deer damage permits are free and allow take year-round. Most are issued for antlerless deer only. DEC says site-specific garden damage is most effectively solved with exclusion fencing.

The 2018 DEC deer report said Westchester was mostly limited to vertical bow hunting. Check current rules.

We did not find a Scarsdale or Westchester County deer or tick program page.

What Lowers Your Tick Risk

The CDC says many people with Lyme are exposed in their own yards. It lists mowing, removing leaf litter, more sun and a 3-foot wood-chip or gravel barrier.

Evidence for the barrier is weak, says Harvard. Cornell says borders change behavior and do not kill ticks. It also calls tick tubes inconsistent.

Yard-scale control has limits. The Cary Institute says cutting disease in people may be hard through yard-by-yard tick management. Personal steps carry more proof.

Westchester Lyme Numbers

Westchester County reported 1,311 Lyme cases for 2023. These are lab-based probable cases, and counting changed in 2022.

Do not compare that count with earlier years. We found no published county count for 2024 or 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do deer cause Lyme disease?

Deer do not carry the bacterium. The CDC says deer are not infected with Lyme bacteria and do not infect ticks. They feed adult ticks and help ticks survive and spread.

Does reducing deer reduce Lyme disease?

Sometimes. A CDC review says robust evidence is lacking. Elimination on isolated islands has a substantial effect, and partial reductions gave mixed results.

Does a deer fence stop ticks?

Not reliably. Westchester sites fenced for 25 years had 83% fewer nymphs, but mice, raccoons and opossums crossed the fences. No study shows a fence around one yard lowers ticks or Lyme.

Do deer repellents or deer-resistant plants reduce ticks?

We found no tick data for either. One test of 10 repellents found none stopped all browsing damage on yews.

Is it legal to feed deer in New York?

No. DEC says it is illegal to intentionally feed wild deer or moose in New York.

Do I need a permit to remove deer from my yard?

DEC says a permit is needed for nuisance or damaging deer. Deer damage permits are free and allow take year-round, mostly for antlerless deer. Contact DEC.

How do I lower my tick risk?

Use EPA-registered repellent, treat clothing with 0.5% permethrin, check for ticks, shower soon after being outdoors, and manage the yard by mowing and removing leaf litter. The CDC lists these steps.

Does Pristine Pest control deer or ticks?

No. Pristine Pest is a referral service. We connect Westchester homeowners with licensed providers. Call (877) 938-6799 to be matched.
