Why Cockroaches Are Harder to Eliminate Than Most People Expect

Cockroaches are among the most resilient household pests encountered in Westchester County. Natural Methods That Actually Work

Boric Acid

Boric acid has been used in cockroach control since the early 20th century and remains one of the most reliable non-synthetic options available. When a cockroach walks through a light dusting of boric acid, the powder adheres to its body and is ingested during grooming. It disrupts the cockroach's digestive system and damages its exoskeleton, causing death within a few days.

Effective application requires a very thin, barely visible layer. Piling boric acid in thick deposits is counterproductive because cockroaches detect and avoid it. Apply along the inside edges of cabinet bases, under and behind the refrigerator and stove, and in the void above the false ceiling of cabinet interiors. Reapply if the powder becomes damp because moisture eliminates its effectiveness.

Boric acid is a slower kill than professional-grade bait and will not eliminate an established infestation on its own, but it is a useful supplemental tool and works well in areas where gel bait cannot be applied.

Diatomaceous Earth

Food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is a powder made from fossilized diatoms. Its microscopic sharp edges damage the waxy cuticle of cockroaches, causing them to dehydrate and die. Like boric acid, it works on contact through grooming and requires thin application in dry locations.

What to Avoid
