A Fishing Expedition That Caught Something Real

Warren Booth is an urban entomologist and associate professor at Virginia Tech's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. His graduate student, Camille Block, was building molecular research skills by screening old bed bug samples for a known cockroach resistance mutation.

"It was purely a fishing expedition," Booth told Virginia Tech News. Block didn't expect to find anything. Two of the populations lit up positive.

Booth wanted to rule out a fluke. So his team went back and screened multiple individual bugs from each of the two positive populations. Every single one carried the mutation, meaning the trait had already spread through the entire local population rather than showing up in a few outliers.

Why the Cockroach Connection Matters

Through his prior work on German cockroaches, Booth already knew their resistance to certain insecticides traces to mutations in the nervous system, specifically the Rdl gene.

"There is a gene that's known as the Rdl gene," Booth said. "It's been identified in a lot of other pest species, and it's associated with resistance to an insecticide called dieldrin. That mutation is throughout all of the German cockroaches. We're not finding populations without that mutation, which is kind of amazing."

Now bed bugs carry it too, at least in the two populations tested so far. Two unrelated urban pests appear to be converging on the same genetic fix for the same chemical threat.

The Pet Flea Medicine Theory

Dieldrin has been banned in the US since the 1990s, so it can't be what's currently driving selection for this mutation in bed bugs. Booth points to a related chemical instead: fipronil.

Fipronil and dieldrin work the same way at the molecular level, on the same receptor the Rdl gene controls. Fipronil is not labeled for bed bug control, but it is common in spot-on flea and tick treatments for dogs and cats.

Booth's theory: pets treated with fipronil spot-on products often sleep in bed with their owners. That transfers pesticide residue onto bedding and mattresses, the exact habitat bed bugs live in. Low, repeated exposure over years is a textbook setup for selecting resistant survivors.

"If any bed bugs came into that environment, they would have been subjected to the fipronil and then selected for the mutation in the population," Booth said. It's a theory, not a confirmed cause, but it's the most direct explanation researchers have so far.

Not a Pet Product Recall

Nothing here suggests fipronil flea treatments are unsafe for pets, or that owners should stop using a veterinarian-recommended product. The finding is about an unintended side effect on a completely different insect, not a warning about flea treatment itself.

What Researchers Don't Know Yet

Booth's team doesn't know whether this mutation is brand new or has been quietly present in bed bug populations for a very long time. Bed bugs have existed for more than a million years, long before synthetic pesticides.

"We don't know if that mutation is novel and it popped up after that, or if that mutation occurred in populations 100 years ago," Booth said. The next step is screening a wider net: more regions, different time periods, and museum specimens that predate modern pesticide use.

In November 2024, Booth's lab became the first to fully sequence the common bed bug's genome, a tool that makes this kind of historical screening possible for the first time.

What This Means for Westchester Homeowners

This research doesn't mean every bed bug in Westchester is resistant to every product. It means a single spot-treatment purchased off a shelf is a weaker bet than it used to be, especially against an established infestation that's already survived one round of chemical treatment.

Heat treatment sidesteps the whole problem. Bed bugs die from sustained high temperature regardless of what resistance genes they carry, since heat doesn't rely on the same nervous-system pathway chemical insecticides target. That's part of why whole-room heat treatment has become the standard professional approach rather than repeat chemical spraying alone.

For DIY treatment, the practical takeaway is to avoid relying on a single product from a single chemical class, and to bring in a professional if a first round of treatment doesn't fully resolve an infestation. A resistant population surviving round one and rebuilding is a common way small infestations turn into large ones.
