Mosquito Bits (Bti Granules)

DEET / Picaridin / IR3535 Skin Repellents
EPA-registered repellents with these active ingredients provide reliable personal protection regardless of wind or mosquito density. DEET 25-30% and picaridin 20% are the most effective and longest-lasting options. Protection follows the person rather than the device or the yard. CDC recommends these for protection against disease-vector mosquito species. Apply to exposed skin and to clothing for full protection.
Best for: personal protection during outdoor activity, especially in high-pressure areas or when leaving the treated yard.
CO2 Mosquito Traps (Mosquito Magnet, Dynatrap)
CO2 traps attract and capture adult mosquitoes using CO2 and often an octenol attractant. Research shows meaningful catches and some population reduction in controlled settings. Real-world residential results are variable: most effective when placed between the breeding source and activity area, running 24/7. At $300 to $600 plus ongoing propane or tablet costs, cost-effectiveness versus professional barrier spray is debatable. Not effective as a standalone solution during high-pressure periods.
Best as a supplemental tool alongside other controls. Placement between breeding source and living area matters more than model.
Permethrin Clothing Treatment
Permethrin applied to clothing (spray or pre-treated garments) repels and kills mosquitoes on contact with the fabric. Remains effective through multiple washes. Strong evidence for tick and mosquito protection for the person wearing treated clothing. Does not reduce yard mosquito populations. Works best combined with a skin repellent for full personal protection.
Best for: outdoor workers, gardeners and hikers in high-tick or high-mosquito areas. Not a yard-level treatment.
Bug Zappers
Bug zappers attract insects with UV light and kill them on an electric grid. Multiple studies have found that mosquitoes represent less than 5 percent of insects killed by zappers: the vast majority are moths, beetles and other beneficial non-pest insects. Mosquitoes are not strongly UV-attracted and are repelled rather than attracted by the heat and light of zapper units. Not recommended as a mosquito control strategy and may harm beneficial insect populations.

Citronella Candles
Citronella candles provide minor repellency within approximately 2 to 3 feet of the flame: primarily from the smoke plume rather than the citronella oil itself. Multiple controlled studies have found no meaningful difference in mosquito landing rates between citronella candles and plain candles at distances beyond arm's reach. Pleasant for ambiance but not a mosquito control strategy.
Use only if you enjoy the scent. Expect no meaningful mosquito protection.
Essential Oil Yard Sprays (Cedar, Peppermint, Eucalyptus)
Essential oil-based yard sprays are marketed as natural mosquito repellents for outdoor surfaces. No EPA-registered product in this category has demonstrated meaningful mosquito population reduction at the yard level. Essential oils have short residual activity (hours, not days) and do not reach the vegetation surfaces where mosquitoes rest. Some may have very brief personal repellent activity when applied directly to skin, but none compare to DEET, picaridin or IR3535 for duration or reliability.

Building a DIY Mosquito Control Strategy
No single DIY product eliminates mosquito pressure in a Westchester yard. The most effective consumer-level approach layers source elimination with larviciding and personal protection:
